AMARILLO FOUNDATION REPAIR EXPERTS
Published: July 9, 2026
The honest answer most Amarillo homeowners don't want to hear: usually no. Standard Texas homeowners policies exclude foundation damage caused by soil movement, settling, and drought — which is exactly what causes most foundation problems here in the Panhandle. Our Pullman clay soil swells with every rain and shrinks in every dry spell, and insurers have specifically carved that risk out of standard policies. But "usually no" isn't "always no." There are three real exceptions worth knowing about before you write off a claim — or pay for repairs that insurance should have covered:
If a sudden plumbing failure — a burst pipe, a slab leak, a broken water line — saturated the soil and damaged your foundation, that's typically a covered water event under your dwelling coverage. The same goes for damage from other covered perils like a vehicle striking the home.
The key word is sudden. A pipe that ruptures and floods the soil under your slab is generally covered. A slow leak that seeped for months before you noticed is usually classified as gradual damage and denied — which is why acting fast when you spot warning signs matters for your wallet, not just your house.
Some Texas carriers offer optional foundation coverage endorsements (one common Texas form is the HO-143TX) that extend your policy to cover foundation damage connected to plumbing and water-related events — including breaking through the slab to reach a leaking pipe and repairing the foundation afterward. Coverage is often capped around 15% of your dwelling limit.
If you own a home in Amarillo and don't know whether you have this endorsement, it's worth a five-minute call to your agent. Adding it before you have a problem is one of the cheapest forms of foundation protection available.
Even without an endorsement, if a plumber has to cut through your foundation to fix a covered pipe failure, many policies pay the cost of accessing the slab and restoring it — cutting, removal, and repair of the concrete — even though the pipe repair itself may not be covered.
No standard policy or common endorsement covers damage from normal soil movement, drought shrinkage, poor original construction, or long-term settling. That's the bulk of Panhandle foundation damage, which is why most foundation repair here is homeowner-paid — and why catching problems early, while they're smaller and cheaper, matters so much.
Insurance adjusters and engineers will inspect your foundation looking for the cause of damage — and they're looking for reasons to classify it as excluded soil movement. What wins claims is documentation: when the damage appeared, evidence of the plumbing failure, and a professional assessment of cause and extent.
That's where we come in. We provide a free structural assessment and a written inspection report documenting the cause and extent of damage — the first thing you'll need for any claim, and solid evidence if the cause is a covered peril.
Don't guess, and don't let an adjuster guess for you. Get an independent assessment first.
